Is your baby too old for newborn photos? I’ve heard so many people upset that they won’t get their eagerly anticipated newborn photos. With lockdown being extended over and over, many new parents are worried they’ve missed the ‘newborn window’ for their baby’s first professional portraits. Many newborn photographers have newborn photography listed on their website as photos between 4-14 days. I’ve sadly even heard of newborn photographers turning away clients that are outside this strict age limit.

So what does this mean for our lockdown parents? You’ve not only been through the normal stresses of pregnancy and birth, but done so with the added strain of lockdown and covid fears. Do you also miss out on beautiful newborn images to treasure as well? Now we are hearing talk about opening up soon, once the state reaches it’s vaccination goals, what does this mean for your newborn sessions?
If there’s one thing that the pandemic has taught me, it’s that we need to remain flexible. Yes, it may be easier to photograph a newborn under 14 days, but that does not mean we can not still get beautiful newborn styled images of your older newborn to treasure. They do not suddenly loose their squishy cuteness, and there are still plenty of gorgeous images to be taken.

After the last lockdown, I had the pleasure of photographing a lot of older newborns, and gained a lot of experience photographing them, adapting my techniques to capture their sweet newness. I’ve photographed 6 week olds, 8 week olds, and even 3 month olds in the newborn style with great success. And trust me, you’ll be glad you have those sweet memories - what ever age we are finally able to open back up.

Older newborns are a delight to capture, not only do you get the sweet sleepy baby photos, but you also get the coo faces and gummy smiles - my favourite! With a little extra patience, and adapting our techniques we are able to still capture timeless newborn photos for you to treasure! Don’t let lockdown mean you miss out on your heirloom quality portraits and prints!
NB: Based on last lockdown, I expect a significant influx of newborn requests over the next couple of months.
